History of the Pretrial Services Agency for the District of Columbia

The Pretrial Services Agency for the District of Columbia (PSA) originated as the D.C. Bail Project in 1960 established by a Ford Foundation grant. It then became a permanent agency (the D.C. Bail Agency) through an Act of Congress, passed on July 26, 1966. The name changed to the DC Pretrial Services Agency in the mid to late 1970s. Under the National Capital Revitalization and Self-Government Improvement Act of 1997, PSA was established as an independent entity within the Court Services and Offender Supervision Agency (CSOSA) in the Executive Branch of the Federal Government. CSOSA/PSA was certified as a federal agency in August 2000.
